Sophie Delaney is an emerging visual artist and curator whose work investigates how the use of digital screens in contemporary art practice can refuse and reject society’s historically patriarchal male gaze within a gallery context. From an intersectional feminist position, Delaney analyses and undertakes extensive research of contemporary art practices and theoretical discourses to develop critical understandings of how digital screens can act as both physical and conceptual barrier that subverts the sexualisation and exploitation of female subjects. With a focus on mediated performance art and digital mediums through a technological feminist discourse, Delaney renders her body to become an avatar and builds highly curated digital landscapes where she is safe from exploitation.
Delaney has extensive experience in curation, exhibition/event management, arts administration and exhibition co-ordination (programs). She has previously worked for BackDock Arts and VENTspace and is currently employed as Programs Manager at Flying Arts Alliance. Delaney is also the Founder of Emergence Collective; a non-for-profit art collective designed by and for emerging artists in Brisbane (Meanjin) established in 2021.
I acknowledge the First Nations custodians & forever owners of the lands where I practice, the Jagera and Turrbal people. I pay my respect to their Elders, lores, customs and creation spirits. I recognise that these ancestral lands have always been places of teaching, learning and wisdom. Sovereignty was never ceded.
